Thermal Ice Storage
Using ice to provide cooling has been common for hundreds of years. The ice man was a common site on many city streets even as late as the 1940's. "Modern" theatres in the late 1800's that advertised air conditioned comfort used ice blocks cut from northern lakes the previous winter.
CalMac manufactures thermal ice storage tanks for off-peak cooling. Ice is built in modular tanks during off-peak times, and used to provide part or all of the chilled water during peak times.
Ice Kube Systems manufactures fluid-to-fluid heat pumps designed to operate at temperatures as low as -20 degrees C (0 degrees F). The heat pumps produce chilled fluid to build ice in the tanks, while making warm water to heat the building at night time. If the heat is not needed, it is stored in an earth loop outside the building.
