Refrigerants

Ozone absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation which is produced by the Sun. Excessive ultraviolet radiation can damage cells of living things - plants, animals and people. Ice Kube equipment uses refrigerant R404A, which does not damage the ozone layer. For more information on ozone, see http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/Resources/Schools/Research/ozone.html

Ice Kube heat pump systems are designed modularly. If a building requires 120 tons (422 kW) of air conditioning capacity, the system is designed with six 20-ton heat pumps instead of a single 120-ton chiller. Each heat pump contains only 12 pounds (5.5 kg) of refrigerant. This virtually eliminates the potential of a large refrigerant leak.

Using several smaller units in place of a single large chiller builds a high level of redundancy into the system, virtually eliminating the possibility of the entire system shutting down.
