Mission Centre Office,Kelowna, BC
This building houses a number of medical offices, and has very high cooling loads because of various medical equipment, including two MRI units that produce a continuous load of over 20 tons, 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
Six Ice Kube units provide up to 120 tons of air conditioning capacity, and up to 1,500,000 btuh (440 kW) of heating capacity. A four-pipe hydronic system delivers hot or chilled water to over 80 fan coil units throughout the 5-storey building. The fan coil units are designed to use 45 deg. F (7 deg. C) chilled water for air conditioning, and 110 deg. F (43 deg. C) water for heating.
The fluid-to-fluid heat pumps maintain the building loop temperatures that are feeding the fan coil units at the appropriate setpoints. When the building needs cooling, heat is rejected first to the warm loop...if the warm building loop is satisfied, heat is rejected to a vertical loop drilled under the parking lot surrounding the building. When the building needs heat, heat is taken first from the building cooling loop...if it is satisfied it draws heat from the earth loop. On a cool winter morning for example, if the west side requires heat and the east side of the building needs cooling because of the morning sun, heat is transferred directly from one side of the building to the other, eliminating the use of some of the compressors. One man's heat is another man's cool!
