Miami Hockey Arena, Miami, MB

The Miami Hockey Arena was built in 1952. After several relatively warm winters in the mid '90's, more and more hockey players and skaters were joining leagues in nearby towns that had artificial ice were able to start skatingtwo to three months earlier than they were. To help keep their kids at home, the town decided in 1999 that it was time for artificial ice in their own rink.

They knew that even if the cost of installing an ice plant was fairly high, the bigger concern was the cost of energy to run the plant and the cost of operating and maintaining it would be high, and started searching for an alternative.

A case study with more detail has been published by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) can be viewed or downloaded here. In English and en Francais.
