The Keeler Centre, Colborne, Ontario
The old hockey arena had served the town of Colborne for over 50 years, but the cost of operating and maintaining it was becoming prohibitive. More space was needed to accomodate the growing needs of the community...a community hall, more spectator seating and more change rooms were needed. In 2001, the community decided it was time to build a new facility.
The new arena includes a banquet hall with a full kitchen to accomodate up to 400 people. The revenue from the hall helps balance the facility budget. Up to 1,000 spectators can enjoy a hockey game in comfort with heated seats. Six change rooms accomodate teams for tournaments.
The entire facility is heated and air conditioned with the heat taken from either the ice or a horizontal earth loop in the playing field behind the building. The community is looking for opportunities to use excess heat generated by the refrigeration system.
The facility manager appreciates the simplicity of operation. The refrigeration plant can be started up and shut down without depending on an outside service company. Skaters have commented on the consistancy and quality of the ice in the new facility.
Colborne is about an hour and a half drive east of Toronto, ON.
