Maitland Recreation Centre & YMCA, Goderich, Ontario
The Maitland Recreation Centre includes an NHL-size, 1,200 seat hockey arena with a walking track, a YMCA aquatic centre and gymnasium, meeting rooms and administration offices. Eight low temperature water-water heat pumps connected to the ice surface, the patented "thermal storage buffer" floor, a horizontal earth loop and a radiant floor heat piping transfer heat from the ice to the building, from the ice to the earth, or from the earth to the building, depending on the building requirements. A DDC system controls the operation of the system.
Ground source heat pumps connected to the earth loop provide heating and air conditioning and domestic hot water, as well as heating the swimming pool. The integrated geothermal Refrigeration/Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning system was chosen in place of a conventional ammonia refrigeration system and gas heating system.
The facility was commissioned in fall of 2003.
