Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is a "voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings." LEED was created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and was adopted by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), who modified it to produce LEED Canada.

The USGBC states that the purpose of LEED is to:

  • define "green building" by establishing a common standard of measurement
  • promote integrated, whole building design practices
  • recognize environmental leadership in the building industry
  • stimulate green competition
  • raise consumer awareness of green building benefits
  • transform the building market 

The LEED point scoring system addresses five categories:

  • Sustainable Sites (SS) 
  • Water Efficiency (WE)
  • Energy & Atmosphere (EA) 
  • Materials & Resources (MR) 
  • Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ) 
  • Innovation & Design Process (ID)

Credits are given within each category and the total is used to determine whether the project is classified as LEED certified, silver, gold or platinum.  In addition to the point scoring credits, the LEED system requires that certain mandatory prerequisites are met.
