Saugeen Shores Arena, Port Elgin, ON
The Saugeen Shores Arena in Port Elgin was the first ice rink in Ontario to discover the benefits of an integrated geothermal Refrigeration/HVAC system. The facility includes a 1,000 seat, NHL size hockey arena, a 400 seat banquet hall, administrative offices, lobby and six change rooms. The facility has been inoperation since December, 1999.
Two years later the town offices and police station were added to the facility. Geothermal heat pumps were connected to the horizontal earth loop that was installed for the original facility.
Six Ice Kube units provide the refrigeration for the ice surface that is in operation from August till April each year. The units warm the fluid that is circulated through the radiant floor heat system throughout the building, including the lobby, change rooms the rink apron and the spectator seating area.
